Good news! S-Class, the book to which Children of the New Era is the prelude, is 90% done! I discarded and rewrote more than fifty pages of Mac-Pages file to get here, but I’m much more content with the final result.
Of course, like any fellow author knows, the first draft is only half of the process. The remaining 50% won’t take as much but in the meanwhile I thought I could let you get in the ‘book-completion’ mood by starting a Countdown to S-Class! There are many things that I can share about the book without giving away its core, after all, and I’d say we can start with a Character Reveal!
The first character of the book that reveals itself to us is the lead, majestically represented in this character concept by my illustrator, Jazz Carmona. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Jason!
He’s the character who’s gone through the most redesign, because it’s the first character on which Jazz had to work following my instructions. We still hadn’t found that writer/illustrator synchrony. The three following characters only needed minor tweaking, and from the fifth onward we were flying through them.
What really took up a few sketches to finalize were the pose and expression.
I wanted the character concepts of Jason and the main antagonist to be in a particular kind of relationship and as such I wanted them to acquire two specific poses. While the antagonist worked splendidly with the one I chose for him, I didn’t like how Jason came out in the sketches on the right. So, I left it to Jazz to come up with a pose. It only took one more sketch.
Now, what do you get from the sketch on the left? What’s different from the final product? Of course, you can tell that he’s a fighter in both versions but focus on his face and you’ll see what I’m talking about. I didn’t want Jason to appear angry or overly-serious, because that’s now who he is at heart.
Sure, you won’t find someone who can do bitter and angry as he does when he’s given a good reason, and by jove, does the plot give him more than enough reasons to get angry, but at the very core Jason is a person who loves nothing more than to have fun. And if you get on his bad side, be sure that underneath it all he will have fun at your expenses. The serious face resisted valiantly, but it was in the end replaced with that small smile and that particular curving of the eyebrows. Now, there was the Jason I know.
That’s it for today’s reveal. If you want to find out a few more details about Jason, you can find them here, on the series’s official site. And if you want to know about S-Class’s release before everyone else, I invite you to subscribe to my mailing list. It’s private, secure, and I will only contact you to tell you that I have a new story out.
See you soon, and I suggest you subscribe to this blog as well. You don’t want to miss the next Character Reveal, because next time… We’re meeting the big bad.
